TOPIC: A rise in the standard of
living in a country often only seems to benefit cities rather than rural areas.
What
problems might this difference cause? How might these problems be reduced?
ANSWER:
The rapid economic growth in many countries has led to a
widening gap between cities and rural areas. This also causes a corresponding
increase in the number of problems that
need to be tackled, as now will be discussed.
Perhaps the most severe consequence is that people living in
rural areas tend to move to city centers for a better life, causing an overload
on infrastructure and services. For example, in Vietnam, there are a growing
number of people migrating into Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to access better
education and medical care. As a result, there will be an overcrowded
population in these areas, putting considerable strains on traffic and hospital
services that are already limited.
Furthermore, there will be an unbalanced workforce between
urban and rural areas. Hoping for a better career path, many new graduates
decide to settle in big cities, and this will make the job market become more
competitive. Meanwhile, many sectors in the countryside experience a labor
shortage, which will eventually holds the local economy back from development.
I believe that several remedies can be used to address the
issues. One measure would be for the government to make a greater investment in
improving conditions in rural areas. For example, schools and hospitals should
be built to make education and health care more accessible in those areas.
Another solution is that incentives can be offered to attract business
investment, generating more jobs for the locals. Finally, teachers and doctors
should be required to spend part of their lives working in rural areas.
In conclusion, a rise in standards of living has resulted in
overpopulation in big cities and an unbalanced workforce in different areas of
a country. However, there are a range of options available to handle the
problems described above.
